Sunday Salon June 8, 2008 Live from Chicago

Hello everyone! Sorry I missed last week, but I had such a hectic weekend the day just got away from me! I've had a good couple of reading weeks, but this last week itself has been rather slow. I've tried to read The Good Fairies of New York but it just hasnt been able to hold my interest. I've received a couple of ARCs in the mail this last week or so, so I may try tackling one of those instead.

I've kept to my book buying moratorium, with the exception of a Birnbaum's guide to Walt Disney World, as I'm going in September with some friends. I'm in Chicago right now for the Printers Row Book Fair, and I assumed that I would be buying all sorts of books there, but alas, nothing! It's five blocks of used book vendors set up outside and you would not have believed the shear number of people that were there! It was also a rather hot and humid day (somewhere in the upper 80s) and it made for a rather miserable shopping experience. We were longing for our little Antiquarian Book Show back home. I'm glad that I went so that I could say I experienced it, but not something I think I will solely come down for again. Today we'll be heading off to the Shedd Aquarium and will be meeting some friends of mine here for lunch before hopping on the train for home.

Thanks for stopping by and happy reading!

All those used books and not one followed you home. Such restraint and will power you have.

It wasn't so much restraint as annoyance at all the people. They just kept shoving and pushing and everyone was trying to get under the tents to get out of the sun, and it was just a generally miserable experience. I wanted to buy books, I was just too frustrated to concentrate.

I've run into a couple of books that didn't hold my interest either, so I can relate there!

I know what you mean about the Book Fair. You would think that going to Hay-on-Wye, which is the second-hand book capital of England would lead to spending mania, but often there is just so much there you simply can't find your way through it all and come away with nothing.

Thanks for stopping by, everyone. I hope that I can catch up on my Salons this afternoon (assuming the weather holds... There are power outages everywhere around me due to some severe weather we had last night, and we may get more of the same tonight).

We ended up going to the Field Museum instead as they had an exhibit called Mythic Creatures: Dragons, Unicorns & Mermaids. It was really quite interesting, showing the history and cultural connections of many legends, not just dragons, unicorns and mermaids.

I was going to pick up an exhibit companion book, but they didn't produce one for this exhibit. The girl at the gift store told us it is extremely rare for an exhibit to come through that doesn't have an accompanying book. But all was not lost! The gift shop did have a copy of Jorge Luis Borges' The Book of Imaginary Beings, so I made my first real book purchase in over a month. I had been trying to remember the name of this book for about a month. I had looked at it quite awhile ago, and for whatever reason for the last month it kept popping into my head but I could never remember the name of it. Well, I turn the corner in the gift shop and there it was on the shelf and I immediately recognized the cover and knew that I had to buy it.

That's too bad about Printer's Row. I would have left too! I hate the heat and hate crowds of sweaty people even more. ha Glad you enjoyed the exhibit.
